Earlier this month, I recapped the US-side restrictions on free movement that beg urgency for those who really know they want to leave the US, and last week, I recapped some of 2025’s major changes to immigration pathways to countries in Latin America that are popular for US emigrants.
Here, I’ll concisely cover the top-line, major changes to residency visas/citizenship in Canada over the last year. Given Canadian PM Mark Carney’s bold speech in Davoslast week clearly asserting Canada’s sovereignty and realignment away from US interdependence, the future of relations (and thus, immigration pathways for USers) is in flux. Nonetheless, we will review what happened in 2025 below, as well as some of the potential implications.
In the third part, I’ll write about projected changes to immigration laws and on-the-ground conditions; this is dynamic, as the attack on Venezuela and threats against Greenland, Mexico, Colombia and Cuba (and possibly Iran) have introduced new implications that continue to unfold.
I can’t fit every detail into one post, so if you are interested in the ongoing play-by-play on immigration in these countries for US citizens, I highly recommend becoming a paid subscriber. I publish a weekly newsletter highlighting the ongoing changes and machinations around immigration, including sociopolitical changes that might influence emigrants’ calculus.
